If you look at the way the publishing industry is evolving the one thing that definitely applies is fragmentation. The internet has allowed for the creation of numerous platforms. These range from the original paper based publishers ranging from newspapers and magazines through to academic and business sites then finally through to societies and individuals. Social Media itself with the growth of specialist local groups has became a very popular information source. The problem is with this fragmentation the readership numbers have now been scattered across the internet. Many of the traditional publishing platforms are becoming economically none viable. Advertising revenue is shrinking whilst there is resistance to the paid subscription model. The so called pay walls. Whilst a limited number of personality influencers are attracting enormous followings running into many millions. The TikToc short video way of communicating has been fully embraced by the younger generation. With both stored and live streaming of video becoming most young (and old) users preference in terms of human engagement.
